Lachis, when Sennacherib came to besiege it, 4 Kings xviii. 13. (Calmet) Beginning. That is, Lachis was the first city of Juda that learnt from Samaria the worship of idols, and communicated it to Jerusalem. (Challoner) This is not very probable. We may translate, "this is the source of sin "or of chastisement; or the imitation of Israel, is the chief of the crimes of Sion. (Calmet)
