(Xenophon, Cyr. 8.Oecon.) St. Jerome thinks they were appointed judges, (Calmet) or assistants of Daniel. (Grotius) Palace. Literally, "gates "(Haydock) as receiver of the taxes, particularly at Susa. (Chap. viii. 2.) (Marsham Egypt. sæc. 18.)

Hippolytus of Rome

And Daniel requested, etc. For as they had united with Daniel in prayer to God that the vision might be revealed to him, so Daniel, when he obtained great honour from the king, made mention of them, explaining to the king what had been done by them, in order that they also should be deemed worthy of some honour as fellow-seers and worshippers of God. For when they asked heavenly things from the Lord, they received also earthly things from the king.

Jerome

AD 420

Daniel does not forget those men with whom he had made intercession to the Lord, and who had shared his peril with him. And so he makes them judges over the province, while he himself does not leave (a variant reading is: "did not leave") the king's side.
