Sallust in his history says that the naphtha is a species of tinder used in Persia, most apt in feeding fires. Others believe that naphtha is the name given to olive pits that are thrown away when the dregs of the oil have dried up. They assert that in the same way, the Greek term pyrinē comes from its property of feeding the fire (pyr).
