Now as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spoke to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into your house, that we may know him.

That is An interpretation of the Vulgate. Belial is sometimes rendered "devilish, apostate "Septuagint, "lawless, or transgressors. "(Menochius) Aquila, "rebels. "Symmachus, "libertines "without education or restraint. (Calmet) Josephus lays the blame on some young men, who had been captivated with the charms of the Levite's wife, whom they had seen in the street. But they seem to have had designs still more criminal, though they were prevailed upon to desist, when she was abandoned to them. (Haydock) The demanded the Levite himself. (Calmet)
