And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little while.

set a seal upon him. That is, placed upon it the bolt of the cross so that he might never regain his strength, nor any more seduce the nations, whom the resurrection will restore and make better.

set a seal upon him. that it was designed to keep it a secret who belonged to the devil's party and who did not. For in this world this is a secret, for we cannot tell whether even the man who seems to stand shall fall, or whether he who seems to lie shall rise again.

no more suduce the nations. The devil, then, is bound and shut up in the abyss that he may not seduce the nations from which the Church is gathered, and which he formerly seduced before the Church existed. For it is not said that he should not seduce any man, but that he should not seduce the nations— meaning, no doubt, those among which the Church exists.

loosed: "Then," as St. Augustine says, "he will be loosed, when also the time will be short. For, as we read, he will rage three years and a-half with all his own powers, and the powers of his own, and they with whom he will make war will be such, that his violence and wiles, great as they are, will not be able to overcome them. But if he was never loosed, his malignant power would the less appear, the most faithful patience of the holy city the less be proved, the less finally would it be discerned, how well the Almighty God made use of his great evil." THE REIGN OF A THOUSAND YEARS <a

cast: He cast him, that is, into the hearts of the persecuting people. Not that the devil was not there before; when he was sent forth from believers, he began to possess the ungodly, who are not only alienated from God, but who hate more grievously those who serve God. And this the Lord openly shewed, when He sent him forth from men into the swine.

But as for what he has said, that after the thousand years he shall be loosed, and shall deceive the nations (Rev. 20:7,8), it is this: that justly he is to be loosed, and to be cast into the burning, and to be judged (vs 10, 12); with those who from old time were gathered together with him, when he gathered the strangers of the kingdom, and Gog and Magog (vs 8).'

he must be loosed for a little while. What sort of little while does he mean? that between the incarnation of the Lord and the end of the present age; for this sort even if it may seem to be very long, when reckoned and compared with the past and the future. For if in the "last" hour, even in 'the eleventh' hour.(Mt. 20:6,9) our Lord appeared in bodily form to us, according to the belief of Holy Scripture, the time until the end has rightly been called short, after which the Devil will be bound again with an eternal and endless bond.

Oecumenius

AD 990
The Revelation does not present to us the millenialism of the atheistic Greeks...Since I have already said that a day is reckoned 'as a 1000 years' by God (Ps. 90:4), and again that the earthly residence of the Lord has been called 'a day' (Is 49:8 ) he says this day is a 1000 years, as though there is no distinction with God between one day and a 1000 years. It was in this period of the Lord's incarnation that the Devil was bound, so that he was unable to oppose the Savior's divine miracles. This was why the destructive demons recognized these spiritual bonds and cried out, "What have you to do with us, Son of the living God? Have you come to torment us before the time?(Mt. 8:29)" The Lord also when talking of stripping off the bonds, said, "Or how can anyone enter a strong man's house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? Then indeed he may plunder his house.(Mt. 12:29)" Since as was said, we have considered the incarnation of the Lord and his earthly residence...

no more suduce the nations. For the Lord's sojourn on earth had to provide rather more succor and care so that the unclean demons might be prevented from exercising the same influence on human beings as they had in the time preceding the incarnation.

Satan shall be bound till the end of time. When the Antichrist, who claims to be the expected Messiah, comes, as the Apostle Paul says in his epistle to the Thessalonians 2, "Only when the one restraining is moved out of the way, will there appear the man of sin..." Therefore, the one being restrained is the great Satan. When he is freed from his bonds, there will appear the Antichrist.
