Yea, a man may say, You have faith, and I have works: show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.

Some men will say: Thou hast faith, and I have works. Shew me thy faith He confutes the same error, by putting them in mind that one can show that he has faith, which is an interior virtue, only by good works, and that good works in a man show also his faith; which is not to be understood, as if good works were merely the marks, signs, and effects of faith, as some would pretend, but that good works must concur with faith to a man's salvation by an increase in grace. (Witham)
Even if somebody believes rightly in the Father and the Son, as well as in the Holy Spirit, if he does not lead the right kind of life, his faith will not benefit him at all as far as his salvation is concerned. For although Jesus says: "This is eternal life, to know you, the only true God (Jn 17:3), we must not think that merely uttering the words is enough to save us. For our life and behavior must be pure as well.
