But they . . . supposed that they had seen a spirit. Because of Jesus" sudden appearance in their midst although the doors were shut. Hence S. Ambrose says, "Although Peter believed in the resurrection, yet it was but natural that he should be terrified and affrighted when he saw that the Lord had the power of suddenly presenting Himself in bodily form, in a place guarded by closed doors, and despite of obstructing walls."
