Revelation 20:4

And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and who had not worshiped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. The Church therefore reigns with Christ in the living and in the dead. For "to this end," as the Apostle says, "Christ died, that He might be Lord both of the living and the dead (Rm 14:9);" and for this reason he has mentioned the souls of the martyrs alone, that they chiefly reign after death, who even unto death have contended for the truth.
