For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men, and the LORD delivered a very great army into their hand, because they had forsaken the LORD God of their fathers. So they executed judgment against Joash.

Shameful, is not expressed in Hebrew. But the putting a king to the torture, (ver. 25.) and upbraiding him with his ingratitude and perfidy, was a great indignity. The author of the Hebrew Trad. among the works of St. Jerome, (Haydock) asserts that the children of Joas were slain before his eyes, while the Syrians reproached him for the unjust murder of Zacharias.
