Now it came to pass one day, that Jonathan the son of Saul said unto the young man that bore his armor, Come, and let us go over to the Philistines' garrison, that is on the other side. But he told not his father.

Day, while it was yet dark. (Josephus) This action would seem rash, and contrary to military discipline, which requires that the general should be apprised of any hazardous enterprise. (Calmet) But it is thought that Jonathan was directed by God, who granted him success. (Cornelius a Lap ide) The Rabbins say, "every augury which is not like that of Eleazar and Jonathan, is null.
