The spirit of Jesus permitted them not. It is the same spirit, which just before was called the Holy Spirit: for the Holy Spirit is the spirit of Jesus, as proceeding from the Son as well as from the Father. (Witham)

Wherefore they were forbidden, he does not say, but that they were forbidden, he does say, teaching us to obey and not ask questions, and showing that they did many things as men. And the Spirit, it says, suffered them not: but having passed by Mysia they came down to Troas.
